My name is Rachel and I'm a native of San Diego, CA . I grew up as child #4 in a family of seven kids. My former places of residence have been Davis, CA (5 years), Hungary (1 1/2 years), Carmel, IN (12 years) and most recently Lima, Peru. I've been in Lima since September of 2016. I currently teach English and also started giving piano lessons. I'm writing this blog as a promise to many people to keep them updated on my many adventures.

Blind leading the blind

As much as I have complained about being recruited to play piano for the Young Men and Young Women, it has been a good thing for me. First it has forced me to get out and about and interact with ward members. I have to say, they are the sweetest group of kids. We got together to practice Tuesday night. Then they decided they wanted to come back and practice Wednesday night. Then I get called out of the blue on Friday night. The Young Women's president called me and said they were at the chapel and could I come over to practice again? I was like, "It's 8 o'clock in the evening on a Friday night and these kids want to practice?" I don't think she quite understood the utter shock in my voice as I was talking with her about this. I had nothing else to do, so I headed on over. Shaking my head the entire way thinking this is not what teenagers do on a Friday night in the United States.

I don't know how to explain it, but from what I've gathered so far the chapel is a bit like a hangout place. People are there all the time. The last two Fridays there's been some activity of some sort there and everyone was enjoying themselves.

The bishops son wanted to practice his english with me tonight and we were talking for a bit. I asked him if they haven't had too many opportunities to sing songs as youth. He said there actually is a woman in the ward that plays really well. In fact, she teaches at one of the best music universities in the city. As you can imagine, she plays for Sacrament meeting every week. But the son was telling me she also is a bit of a perfectionist, likes to complain, and has to have everything her way. He said they tried to have her play a song with the youth at one point and it didn't go very well. So that's why his dad was so excited to discover there was another piano player around.

You know something, I just have a nagging feeling. And I'm finding those nagging feelings usually are right. It is this. Eventually they are going to find some kind of work for me to do, right? Well, here's my prediction.......................Young Womens. I bet you money they are going to put me there.

Guess that goes to show the many "new" opportunities Lima is giving. Like, the fact I never played the piano or have never been in Young Womens in the US. I think I would have raised too much havoc there. But in Lima, the sky is the limit.

Guess I don't know enough of the language to get into trouble if I do end up there.
